This morning I joined Landmark West, Public Advocate Leticia James, City Council Member Helen Rosenthal, and over one hundred UWS residents of all ages, who are outraged by the development proposed for 200 Amsterdam Avenue, at West 69th Street.
This proposed development is completely out-of-character for the neighborhood, and will add nothing to the community besides the dark shadow it will cast. The 12,00 square-foot site was the longtime home of the Lincoln Square Synagogue, and under normal circumstances, would have at most accommodated a small residential building. Unfortunately the story behind this development is anything but normal.
According to a statement from Council Member Rosenthal, "this gerrymandered zoning lot assembled on the site represents the worst of real estate chicanery. "The bizarre shape of the lot runs counter to the very spirit of space requirements". and "raises very serious questions about whether these transactions may have resulted in other buildings on the block becoming non-compliant with the zoning code."
Although it may appear that the construction of this development is a forgone conclusion, Public Advocate James assured us that this fight is far from lost; and promised to use every legal tool at her disposal to stop developers from throwing shade on the UWS.
